Daled - Fourth Grade

Fourth grade students in our Daled class will grapple with the study of Torah and will examine and discuss the following questions: What is the Torah? What is the Bible? What do these ancient books mean to Jews today? What do they mean to me? These young people will put into context the ancient texts of the Jewish people and experience the Torah as a living text.

Daled students will:

• Actively participate in the cycle of the Jewish year, not only through a celebration of the holidays but also through a weekly study of the Torah portion using creative dramatics, story telling and bibliodrama. Each week, students will encounter Biblical narrative in its original form, and will follow the narrative from the beginning of the school year until the end.
• Develop their Hebrew language skills through the incorporation of short passages from the Torah in Hebrew, and continue to advance their Hebrew language skills.
• Utilize a Hebrew language program that teaches the foundation of Hebrew - the root system- and helps add meaning to the Hebrew of the prayerbook, enabling our Daled students to understand what is found in our liturgy and our biblical texts. Students will immerse themselves in the study of Hebrew during this pivotal year in their education.
• Search out their roots and trace their personal heritages in order to truly understand and value their individual Jewish heritage. Daled students will study Jewish communities around the world through a study of Jewish history, culture and tradition. Tradition, as it varies from community to community, will form the framework for understanding what the ancient texts of the Torah mean to Jews around the world.

Our goal in our Daled class is to develop our students’ sense of connectedness to Jewish text and the cycle of the Jewish year as they mature, as they extend their knowledge of liturgical Hebrew. Students will also widen their understanding of various Jewish cultural traditions and have the opportunity to study their family as a unique Jewish unit.
