PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND MAJOR EVENTS

The Nursery School at Habonim welcomes parents into our School and the community at large. We recognize the importance of partnering with our children’s families during these early school years. Our goal is to establish open lines of communication, trust, and mutual respect—all in the best interests of each child.  With the help of parents, we want to learn as much as we can about each child in order to discover the best ways to help him or her grow into a curious, relaxed, and confident learner.

Over the years, our parents have generously contributed their time and talents to our School in a number of ways, ranging from classroom visits to Parent’s Association participation to governance of the Nursery School.

Opportunities for Parent Involvement include:

  • Parent’s Association—This Association is solely run by the parents of the Nursery School and spearheads all fundraising and special events that take place throughout the school year. Each classroom has two class parents who provide linkage to the Nursery School administration and the Rabbi. There are a number of Parent’s Association committees on which parents serve, including but not limited to the Purim Carnival Committee, the Admissions Committee, the Library Committee, and the Snack Committee. Each year, the Parent’s Association Co-Chairs sit on the Nursery School Committee.
  • Nursery School Committee—This committee, which is an advisory board for the Nursery School, meets approximately eight times during the school year. The committee is comprised of elected parent representatives, members at large from the Synagogue, Parent’s Association Co-Chairs, a liaison to the Board of Directors of the Synagogue, and the Nursery School Director.
  • In-School Events
o       Shabbat—Throughout the course of the school year, each child’s family takes a turn as the invited guest for the classroom Shabbat celebration.
o       Birthday parties—Each family is invited to share in a small birthday celebration in the classroom on the occasion of their child’s birthday.
o       Share a special talent or interest—Parents and other family members are invited to come to the classroom and read a book or share an interest. In the past, parents and grandparents have read a book, played an instrument, cooked pierogies and hamentaschen, told the story of silk, and discussed architecture. Possibilities are limitless!

Parent Impressions
  • “The Nursery at Habonim is a unique jewel in the city. It is small warm and personal, but also dynamic and vibrant. The minute our daughter walked into the school she felt at home, as did we as part of its wonderful community of parents. Our daughter’s love of learning and exploration of art and music, and of Jewish holidays and rituals, are gifts that Habonim gave her.”
  • “Our family feels privileged to be part of the Habonim community. From the day we interviewed at the Nursery School, and until the day our daughter graduated, my wife and I were impressed with the professionalism of the staff. Our daughter was truly excited to go to school each day. The classroom projects and lessons stimulated her curiosity and helped her grow socially and intellectually. When she encountered difficulties, the caring and compassion of the classroom faculty got her through them with minimal disruption. We count the families we met through the school amongst our closest friends and continue to remain active in the synagogue. We look forward to the time our youngest becomes old enough to attend Habonim.”
  • “I can well remember the mix of excitement and anxiety my husband and I felt when we first began applying to pre-schools for our son. Having gone through this experience, we know that choosing a preschool that will provide the best fit for your child and your family is certainly a challenge. For us, Habonim was the right choice. As nursery school parents, we watched our son’s sense of himself, along with his Jewish identity, strongly emerge under the guiding hands of his dedicated teachers, who throughout held a steady course to the attainment of each child’s potential.
